Description

Working under the direction of the educational issues director/deputy director and in cooperation with other AFT staff, the assistant director has primary responsibility for activities related to English language learner (ELL) students including policy formulation, program development and implementation, and partnership outreach. The assistant director also participates in and provides support to the AFT Hispanic Task Force. This is a temporary assignment for approximately one year.


Requirements

Research and write materials, reports and other publications for the educational issues department related to ELLs.
Assist in coordinating publications activities with other vital functions of the department.
Support the work of the AFT legislation department for NCLB and ELL issues.
Support the work of the ELL Cadre, the AFT Hispanic Task Force and represent AFT in the Hispanic education community.
Lead the work on Colorín Coloradoa partnership project between AFT and the Reading Rockets project sponsored by the PBS station WETA.
Other tasks as assigned.

Primary knowledge skills and abilities:

Excellent research and writing skills.
Training and experience in the education policy arena relative to ELL educational issues.
Experience working at the national, state or local level, as is a college level or advanced degree in policy studies or a related field.
Fluency in Spanish is required.

Teaching experience is desirable.
Knowledge of AFT and/or its affiliates is preferred.
Familiarity with unions and/or non-profit associations is preferred.
Some travel is required.
